Mendoza Charitable Trust
Major Ramon J. Mendoza Jr. USMC was killed in action while serving in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom on November 14, 2005. At the time of his death, Ray was the Commanding Officer of Company E, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment. He left behind a legacy of selfless service, courage, physical toughness and love for his fellow Marines and Sailors. He also left a loving wife and two young children.
In the spirit of Major Mendoza’s faith and resolve of providing his children a Catholic Education, an Endowment Fund has been established at St. Mary, Star of the Sea School (http://www.stmarystars.org/) in Oceanside, California in his name. The purpose of the fund is to provide support for tuition and associated costs for the Mendoza family as well as other military families in need.
Fund administration is being facilitated by Bellon & Lisiecki LLP. The law office will donate $300-$500 for every estate plan prepared for St. Mary Families, faculty and friends to the Military Family Endowment Fund. For questions, contact Sue Bellon at (760) 721-2899, or e-mail sbellon@attyhelp.com.
FAQs
What is an endowment ? A transfer, generally as a gift, of money or property to an institution for a particular purpose. The contributions are invested for perpetual growth, and portions of the funds are distributed to meet the chosen charitable purpose. Unused portions are reinvested and continue with the institution’s commitment to provide services for the future. The very word “endowment” encourages donors to believe that the fund is intended to exist forever.
What the fund is not:
1. The fund is not part of the operating reserves for the school - the monies are an additional resource to support and supplement the charitable purpose.
2. The fund is not “rainy day” or emergency operating funds – the school has a moral obligation to maintain the funds within established guidelines because that is the expectation from all previous donors to the fund.
